December 2023 // A List

Oh, December. What a gift you were. A much-needed month.

A month that was less stressful than the last couple of months.

December was a busy month.

A month full of events.

A festive month.

Full of good food, drinks, and family and friends.

December was a month for reflecting.

So many thoughts on this year.

So many hopes and wishes for the new year.

So many things left undecided and unanswered that will carry on into the following year.

But thankfully, those things are not necessarily unwelcome.

But for now, I'll push it to the back of my mind.

I'm sure the answers will make its appearance next year.

December was a month for remembering.

Looking back at photos and memories from the year (and years before that).

Feeling grateful for the childhood photos that Mami took

And the photos that I am taking.

Realizing that photos truly are a treasure.

December was a month for comforting my mind.

Walks on my favorite trail.

Evening walks in my neighborhood.

The cold air was a relief for my body and soul.

Long, hot baths after long days.

Hot chocolate, seasonal treats, and good books to help ease my mind.

December was a month full of equal parts chaos and silence.

An odd, interesting mix.

The chaos...an annoyance.

The silence...very much welcomed.

December, you were an absolute dream.

A welcomed respite.

But now, a new year and a new month is making its way.

January is almost here.

My birthday is just a few days away.

A new chapter will begin soon.

I. Am. Ready.

So long, December. I'll be forever grateful for this month.

So long, 2023.

What a year full of growth and learning.

It was a trying year at times, but overall, it was a good one.

Hello, 2024. I'm welcoming you with open arms.

May this be a more peaceful year.

Winter 2023 Bucket List

Happy Thursday! Winter is officially here! Winter is my least favorite season, but this is due to my hate for cold weather. I love almost everything else about winter (think the holiday season, hot chocolate, etc.), but the cold and dreary weather is winter's downfall. However, as I've gotten older, I've come to embrace winter and welcome the season with open arms. I love that this time of year brings families and friends together, and I can't wait to celebrate the holidays with my family. One of the highlights of winter is celebrating my birthday, and I'm looking forward to celebrating my upcoming birthday.

I'm battling a cold right now, which has caused me to change one of the things I wanted to do to celebrate the first day of winter. However, this cold will not stop me from sharing my winter bucket list. So, let's get to the good part and check out my 2023 winter bucket list.

  • Organize and declutter the closets
  • Donate clothing and other things we no longer use or need
  • Watch a new (or new-to-me) holiday movie
  • Work in my sketchbook/journal
  • Complete 1 crafty class
  • Finish my 2023 December Daily mini-album
  • Take more photos
  • Publish 2 personal essays on the blog
  • Pick a new word for 2024
  • Make new goals for 2024

    • Participate in a blog hop
    • Submit a piece to an online publication
    • Try a simmer pot recipe
    • Go for a walk on the Silver Comet Trail
    • Check out a local holiday lights display
    • Participate in a book challenge
    • Make a meal using the crockpot
    • Try a new recipe in our air fryer
    • Go somewhere new with my family
    • Bake cookies
    • Try a new hot chocolate recipe
    • Go on a date night
    • Have a weekly family game night

If You and I Had Coffee

If you and I had coffee...

We'd meet virtually because everyone is getting sick again, and we're trying desperately to avoid that. I'd probably have a peppermint hot chocolate since I'm trying to watch my caffeine intake. I'd probably have a chocolate chip scone or a holiday-decorated donut on the side.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I'm looking forward to having two weeks off from work. I'm excited to spend time with my family, celebrate the holidays, and get some much-needed rest. I look forward to watching movies, drinking seasonal drinks, eating seasonal treats, and celebrating winter's arrival.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I've been reflecting on my word for 2023, which is work. I've been thinking a lot about the next steps in my career. My current job has made me realize a lot of things. I'm anxious and excited about all the possibilities, but most importantly, I'm hopeful.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I'm starting to create more again, and I absolutely love it. I really missed getting to scrapbook and work on my Project Life album. I'm working on my December Daily album and Five Things: December.

I'm considering creative projects I want to work on in 2024. One of those things is creative writing and also working on essays. I'd like to submit more pieces to publications.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that it sounds so strange that 2023 is coming to a close. I'm glad we were able to catch up before this year ends. It's been an exciting year. I hope you enjoy the rest of your month and what's left of this year.

10 Things That Made Me Happy This Week

Happy Saturday! Today, I'm linking up with Charlotte, Lindsay, and Beth for their weekly happy and grateful list link up.

    1. 12 Days of Holiday Spirit began at my job. I'm really excited to participate in some of the days.

    2. Ugly Sweater Day! I was so excited to wear my ugly sweater on Friday. I think I'm going to buy an ugly sweater every year.

    3. We bought an air fryer and are so excited to try it out.

    4. Mistletoe Mischief by Adriana Locke. I believe that this novella is available when you sign up for her newsletter, but it's really great.

    5. Holiday-themed romance stories. 'Tis the season! I have so many that I need to read, and I'm so excited to read them all.

    6. Graves by Echos. This has been on repeat.

    7. December journal prompts by Amy Turn Sharp.

    8. Coffee + Crumb's Winter Collection is out now! I've been enjoying reading Coffee + Crumbs' seasonal collections. I really enjoyed the photo essays.

    9.  Working on my December Daily mini album. I actually prepped a bunch of pages, so the only thing I really need to do is add pictures and do some journaling. I'm hoping to complete this mini-album, but I will give myself grace.

    10. Christmas lights. One of my favorite things during the holiday season is the lights.

    Target Finds: Holiday Edition

Happy Wednesday! It's the most wonderful time of the year! I'm so excited about this edition of Target Finds because every item I put on the list is holiday-themed. I've been to Target way too many times over the past few weeks, but they have so much good stuff, especially during this time of year. Before I start to ramble about my love for Target, let's get to the good part and check out my finds for the month.

    Peppermint Crunch Hot Drink Bomb

I was so excited when I saw this hot chocolate bomb. I've always been a big fan of Target's hot chocolate bombs, and I always buy a pack or two, especially the seasonal ones. This peppermint crunch hot drink was so good. It was the perfect blend of peppermint and chocolate.

Women's Merry and Bright Graphic Sweater

I bought this sweater for my job's ugly sweater day. I love that it's oversized and it's soft. I worried the sweater would be itchy, but it's so soft and comfortable.

    Peppermint Whipped Cream

I'm a sucker for Target's seasonal whipped creams, and I always buy their seasonal desserts. This whipped cream is so good. It's not overpowering, and it has the perfect amount of peppermint. I love pairing this with my hot chocolate. I highly recommend trying this whipped cream with the peppermint crunch hot drink bomb. Those two combined were perfection.

    The Grinch Oversized Graphic T-Shirt

This was another buy for a holiday-themed day at my job. Even though it's an oversized T-shirt, it still fits well. I love the design and can't wait to wear it.

What are some of your favorite Target Finds?

    December Goals

Happy Monday! Can you believe it's finally December! I'm so excited for the holiday season! I found this poem by Jennae Cecelia that perfectly describes December for me.

    December holds so much.

The end of the best times,

Or what is needed to come to an end.

    December has hints of hope

    For what is to come.

It has closure for all that was lost.

December is a heavy and hopeful month.

November was a hectic month. At times, it was stressful, but many days were full of hope and encouragement from family and friends. Unfortunately, cold and flu season was upon my household. My sons were sick, and then I got sick. However, I'm so grateful for modern medicine because it really helped. Thankfully, we were all feeling better by the time Thanksgiving break arrived.

We all went to my little sister's home for Thanksgiving this year. John took me on a date to the Atlanta Christkindl Market, and we had a blast! I tried glühwein for the first time, and it was good. It was a bit strong but still good.

It may have been a busy month, but I gave myself tremendous grace. I made sure to rest and take breaks. I made a few goals, but it was absolutely ok if I didn't actually accomplish any.

Since I mentioned goals and it's a new month, let's recap how I did with my November goals and check out my new goals for December.

    Recap of November Goals

    • Read and review 1 book I received from NetGalley: I read and reviewed Continental Drifter by Kathy MacLeod and Eclipse by Wilder Poetry.
    • Read 1 book I borrowed from the library: I finally finished The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. This took me a while to read, but I did enjoy the book. I also read There's A Ghost In This House by Oliver Jeffers. Raphael absolutely loved this book. I plan to purchase a copy for him.
    • Complete a One Little Word lesson: Yikes! Once again, I didn't complete a lesson. However, I'm excited for December's lesson. I still plan to work on the other lessons as well.
    • Try 1 new recipe: I can't remember if I personally made anything new, but I did try Mami's Coquito for the first time. It's pretty wild that this year was the first time I tried it, but I'm very picky regarding coconut in my food and drink. I'm also not a big fan of eggnog, which I had heard that it tastes similar to that, so I never really had a desire to try it. However, I will say that I did like the drink. It didn't taste too much like eggnog and was actually really good.
    • Participate in this month's blog hop: I did participate in Exhale's blog hop. You can check out my piece here.

    December Goals

    • Read and review 1 book I received from NetGalley
    • Read 1 holiday-themed book
    • Complete Liz's December: Five Things ecourse
    • Work on my December Daily
    • Make sure to rest and practice self-care
    • Watch a new (or new-to-me) movie
    • Try a Winter Simmer Pot recipe

What are your goals for December? How did you do in November?

    Dulce // Sweet

I come alive in the fall time. The early morning light at 7 AM is a welcome gift when Daylight Saving Time ends. I am not a morning person, but coffee is a tremendous help. That first sip of coffee before getting ready for work and taking the kids to school is such a comfort and absolutely glorious.

For some reason, Mother Nature decides to be even more beautiful during fall. The moon constantly has me in awe and wonder on fall nights. I seek peace at the Silver Comet Trail and, often, will find myself walking for far longer than I usually would.

I find myself listening much more to the sweet sounds of nature around me. The hoot of the neighborhood owl always brings a smile to my face. The falling leaves and the crunching sound they make as I continue my evening walk around the neighborhood.

Saturday mornings are spent making big batches of banana chocolate chip waffles for the boys. This is when I usually listen to classic songs. Good music is heard all around. James Taylor is crooning How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) while my husband twirls me around. Sometimes, the boys smile and go back to watching their morning cartoons.

With the fall season comes cold and flu season. Of course, I always call Mami and ask for her remedios. Only her remedies for colds and sore throats will do. "Prepárate un té con limón y miel," she says. She'll insist that I make the tea along with a slew of other remedies. "La miel sabe dulce," she reminds me when I complain of making tea. She knows I hate tea, but it always works. It's true what they say: mothers know best. And every year, without fail, I call Mami to ask for her remedios despite knowing precisely what she'll recommend. I may be an adult, but I still find comfort in my mother's voice. Always have and always will.

The in-between of seasons sometimes has me feeling conflicted, especially when it's fall and signs of winter are appearing. With Halloween falling on the last day of October, November 1st seems to be the unofficial start to the holiday season. But fall still has a chokehold on me. However, I'll still listen to my fall playlist while throwing in a Christmas song or two. Fall always comes to an end, but it'll always have an everlasting hold on my heart. As the years go by, I hope to always remember the everyday moments and sweet sounds of my favorite season, fall.

If You and I Had Coffee

If you and I had coffee...

We'd meet virtually because I am currently down with strep and a horrible cold. This is my first time ever having strep, and I hope you have never had to experience it because it's been terrible. Thankfully, I don't have Covid or the flu, so I'm grateful. I'm feeling much better now, but I'm not 100% there yet.

I'd probably stare at my chicken broth in disgust and hope because I could use a cup of coffee, but it's been hard to even eat or drink anything.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that November arrived like a whirlwind. I can't believe that the holidays are almost here. Although I wish I hadn't gotten sick, I'm glad it happened before the holidays.

Since I mentioned holidays, I'm looking forward to spending time with my family and having time off of work. I'm looking forward to some much-needed rest, good books, hot chocolate, and comfort food.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I'm excited to start working on my Project Life album. I haven't been creating as much as I like, and I really don't like how that made me feel. I will have to make memory keeping a priority and part of my self-care routine.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I can't stop thinking about what's going on in Gaza. My heart is breaking. I came across a post on @aslyum_speakers Instagram page of words adapted from a piece by Rachel Brathen (@yoga_girl) that has stayed with me for weeks.

There is a woman in my feed.

    A video.

    Don't look away.

    She is kneeling quietly.

    In her arms, a child.

    Don't look away.

She holds her little one gently. She doesn't wail, or scream, or beg.

    It's a quiet moment.

    I don't look away.

I watch as she kisses her child's face through the thin sheet that's wrapped

around their body. The moment is so tender. so hauntingly, unbearably

    painful.

All throughout, she is whispering. Words I can't hear, and even if I did,

    they're in a language I don't speak.

I know what she is saying though. Every mother watching her knows.

We all love our children in the same language.

    Love

Is all of our mother tongue.

    Don't look away.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I'm thankful that we were able to catch up. I'm grateful for technology and that we didn't have to miss our chat this month. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week and spend the upcoming holiday however you wish.

    What would you tell me?

    Until next time...

    November Goals

Happy Monday! How is it already November?! Time is going by so fast. Before we know it, it'll be a new year. Anyways, is anyone else struggling with the time change? I absolutely hate Daylight Saving Time. It always takes me a while to get used to the time change.

Last month felt strange. October is usually one of my favorite months, but this year felt different. The month felt so heavy, especially when I kept seeing and hearing about what was going on in Gaza. I won't speak too much on that because I don't even have the words to explain how I feel, but I will say that my heart is breaking for the innocent people suffering.

Work has been busy. Some days are better than others, but I've been thinking a lot about the next steps in my career. One thing I'm proud of is that I'm advocating and standing up for myself. I have so many ideas and love that I currently have several options to look into for progressing in my career.

Last month, I crossed a few things off my fall bucket list. We went on a haunted trail walk and attended our city's Spooky Festival. We also went to a handmade market a few times. I definitely plan to go to the handmade market more often. It was so nice to support local small business owners. We went to the Stone Mountain Pumpkin Festival. We went trick-or-treating and had a blast.

This month, I'm looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with my family, having a week off from work, starting Christmas shopping, and decluttering. I'm looking forward to attending my city's Christmas tree lighting and a few holiday/Christmas festivals and events.

Before I continue to ramble about my excitement over the upcoming holiday season, let's check out my new goals for the month and have a quick recap on how I did with my October goals.

    Recap of October Goals

    • Read and review 2 books I received from NetGalley: I read Goodnight Night Sweats by Haut Flasch, 15-Minute Drawing by Heinke Nied, and How We Got By by Shaina Feinberg. Out of the three books, 15 Minute Drawing was my favorite.
    • Read 2 books I borrowed from the library: I borrowed several books but sadly didn't finish the books.
    • Complete 1 One Little Word lesson: I did not complete a single One Little Word lesson. The month of October was not a creative month for me. Usually, I'm bursting with creative energy during October, but this time around was different. Part of that is due to how heavy the month felt for me. October was still exciting, but I couldn't get into creating.
    • Complete at least 1 month in my 2023 Project Life album: Yikes! I didn't work much on my project life album, but I ordered a few things for some layouts that I plan to make. I've got to try to make a schedule or set a reminder to work on my album.
    • Journal every day: I didn't journal every day, but I did work in my journal a few times.
    • Try 1 new recipe: I can't remember if I tried a new one, so I will assume I didn't try one.
    • Finish Side by Side ecourse: I still have some prompts to complete. I've been taking my time with this ecourse and am not upset about it. I really have enjoyed completing the prompts without worrying about a "due date."
    • Participate in this month's blog hop from Exhale: I did participate in the October blog hop. You can find my piece here.

    October 2023 // A List

    Oh, October.

One of my favorite months of the year.

    It's spooky season.

    Cozy season.

As always, October started off strong.

I was optimistic, but my goodness, there were some trying days.

Despite that, I'm proud of standing up for myself and finally putting my foot down.

This month was the month for self-care and comfort.

I found comfort in so many ways.

Like seasonal hot chocolate, walks at the Silver Comet Trail, a few good romance novels, and long hot baths.

Tears were definitely shed, but it felt so good to release them.

Sometimes, you really need a good cry.

This month was the month for community.

I felt loved and appreciated by so many.

    I felt heard.

October was a month of intentionally listening and taking action.

It was a month of really taking the time to observe and reflect.

This month, I felt so much closer to making a big decision.

A few things remain to be seen.

But some big changes will be coming soon.

This was a month of hope.

And I'm going to continue to do so.

    So long, October.

You were both a dream and a nightmare at times.

    Hello, November.

I'll admit I was hoping to avoid you, but I'm hoping for better days ahead.

So please go easy on me.

    A List of Hauntings

    A list of hauntings...

The witching hour. Those 3 AM thoughts. The creaking stairs. Wondering if I locked the front door at night. Wondering if I switched out the load of laundry. The never-ending to-do list. The mountain of laundry that still needs to be folded but is still in the basket...after 3 or 4 days. The mistakes of my rebellious years. The unfortunate hairstyle from middle school. The car accident I was in at 17. And the 2022 car accident. The highway. Not speaking up. Missed opportunities. Those moments of second-guessing myself. The deaths of my baby brother and grandmother. The What Ifs that will go unanswered. Unspoken words to lost loved ones and friends. The unknown cause of my water breaking and going into labor at 35 weeks. Wondering if I'm failing at motherhood. Realizing that my kids are growing up so fast. Realizing that my oldest son is only a few years away from being an adult. Wondering what life will be like for my children after I am no longer physically present. Time.

If You and I Had Coffee

If you and I had coffee...

We'd meet at a small, local coffee shop and order some seasonal drinks. I'd probably order a seasonal hot chocolate because, apparently, I need to lower my caffeine intake. I'd also order a pastry or two.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I'm so glad that it's October. It's one of my favorite months of the year. I absolutely adore fall and everything that comes with it. Halloween is fast approaching, and I'm excited. I've been really into making soups and other comfort foods. Surprisingly, I haven't bought any Halloween candy, but that will change soon. I also want to watch a few spooky movies and read at least one horror/spooky book or story.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that my heart is breaking for the mothers over in the Middle East. I won't speak too much about what's going on over there because, honestly, I'm trying to educate myself on what's going on, but my heart is breaking for the mothers and children of Israel and Palestine.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that my stress level is slowly but surely decreasing, and I'm so grateful. Things are slowly getting better, and I'm happy that I was able to advocate for myself.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I've been enjoying working on a few creative projects, like the one-line drawing book I've been using to practice my own one-line drawings and my Project Life album. Next, I'd like to work on one of my traveler's notebooks and hope to journal more. I also hope to complete at least one project I've "abandoned."

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I'm glad we were able to meet up again. I hope everything goes well for you and hope you enjoy the rest of your month.

    What would you tell me?

    Target Finds

Happy Wednesday! It's been a couple of months since I've shared a Target Finds post, so I thought it'd be fun to share one this month, especially since Target usually has so many good things during autumn. And this will be a Halloween/Fall heavy post because my favorite holiday is almost here, and I'm excited.

    Pumpkin Harvest Grillable Dessert

When I saw this dessert, I knew I had to buy it, especially since we bought the s'mores grillable dessert a few months back. It's so cute, and I can't wait to try it. This would be perfect for a movie night or dessert after dinner. Their grillable desserts are seasonal, but I love that they have made these for different seasons and holidays. Also, this week, Target is having a 20% off sale on their Favorite Day and Good & Gather seasonal snacks, and this grillable dessert is included. So, if you've been eyeing this, I recommend you get it now.

Halloween Milk Chocolate Hot Drink Bomb

I'm a sucker for hot chocolate bombs, especially seasonal ones, so I bought several. I loved the milk hot chocolate bomb and plan to try the other flavors I purchased.

    Halloween Vanilla Cake Pops

My kids love these cake pops. I think Target's cake pops are seasonal items, so I always get excited when I see them, especially when it's clear that they are decorated for a holiday. The cake pops are a little pricey but are a nice treat.

    Kraft Deluxe White Cheddar Cups

This is a little random and not Halloween/fall-themed, but I had to include it. I have been on a mac and cheese cup kick. The white cheddar cups are my latest obsession and one of my favorite comfort foods. I absolutely love how convenient these are. They are easy to make and are filling. I usually have one for lunch, but sometimes I make one for a snack.

What are some of your favorite Target Finds?

    October Goals

Happy Monday! Can you believe it's finally October? I'm so excited because October is one of my favorite months of the year. I truly come alive during October. I've noticed that I'm much more creative during this month.

I'm looking forward to making more comfort food, celebrating my little sister's birthday, celebrating Halloween all month long (if you don't know, it's my favorite holiday), buying the kids' costumes, and reading so many good books, especially fall and Halloween-themed books. I'm also looking forward to going to the Stone Mountain Pumpkin Festival and visiting a local haunted house attraction.

September started off a bit rough but came to a good end. We enjoyed our fall break, and it was just what I needed. We went to the fair and had a blast. We also went to some farmers' markets and bought a few things. John and I went on a date, and it felt so nice to get some time to ourselves. I'm feeling refreshed and ready to get back into our routine.

Now that I've mentioned getting back into my routine let's check out my new goals for the month and have a quick recap on how I did with my September Goals.

    Recap of September Goals

    • Read and review 2 books I received from NetGalley: I read Lily by E.G. Creel and Illustrators' Sketchbooks by Martin Salisbury. I really enjoyed reading Lily and thought Illustrators' Sketchbooks was interesting.
    • Read 1 book I borrowed from the library: Yikes! So I didn't finish reading the books I borrowed from the library. In fact, they are overdue, so I'll need to renew them.
    • Complete 1 One Little Word lesson: I completely forgot to work on this. I'm so far behind, but I plan to work on this project.
    • Complete at least 1 month in my 2023 Project Life album: I didn't complete a month in my Project Life album, but I did work on it, so I will consider this a partial pass (is that a thing?).
    • Complete Side by Side ecourse: I'm unsure whether to consider this a pass or fail. I worked on all of the daily prompts except for a couple because I'm still thinking about how to even write down my response. So, I'm going to consider this goal accomplished.
    • Work on my Little Summer Joy mini accordion album: Honestly, I might consider this an abandoned project. I got the base complete, and the photos are in the album, but I have yet to write any words. I might keep it a visual album without words, or maybe I'll add some journaling on some pages.

    October Goals

    • Read and review 2 books I received from NetGalley
    • Read 2 books I borrowed from the library
    • Complete 1 One Little Word lesson
    • Complete at least 1 month in my 2023 Project Life album
    • Journal everyday
    • Try 1 new recipe
    • Finish the Side by Side ecourse
    • Participate in this month's blog hop from Exhale

    September 2023 // A List

    September, September.

What a month you have been.

Started off a bit rough but is coming to a gentle end.

I learned so many things this month.

    Realized so much.

I'm closer to making a big decision, and I'm excited.

September was a month of contemplation.

A month for spending time with my family.

A month of seeking and finding comfort.

A month filled with good books and good music.

September was a month of letting go.

A month of thinking, "What will be, will be."

A month of taking care of myself.

    September was an emotional month.

    Anger.

    Fear.

    Hope.

    Joy.

    Love.

    September, you were a whirlwind.

The month went differently than I had planned and hoped.

But I'm thankful for everything (yes, the bad and, of course, the good) that has happened during this month.

So thank you, September, and goodbye.

    Hello, October.

    I've been waiting for you.

    Currently: September 2023

    Currently...

Watching: Michael and I have been watching some videos we need to edit for the Hispanic Heritage Month school project he's working on. His class has to make a dish or drink and record themselves making it. I remember having to do this project in middle school, so it brought back memories.

Reading: All the romance novels. I'm also reading Dear Medusa by Olivia A. Cole and How We Got By by Shaina Feinburg. It's taking me longer than usual to read both books, but I'm almost done reading them.

Listening: I laughed when I wrote down the names of the artists I'm currently listening to. My playlists are so unpredictable, but I love it. Anyway, I'm really loving Crimson Apple's Noises and War With My Mind. Nina Simone's New World Coming (darkDARK remix) has been on repeat. Kennie's Pretty is another new favorite.

Making: I've been working on my Project Life album and was so excited to put my new supplies from Paper Person to good use. I'm still making one-line drawings in my journal, and it's been so much fun.

Feeling: I'm feeling so content and hopeful. This week off of work was just what I needed.

Planning: I have a few big plans in the works. I'm more hopeful and excited than anxious about these plans, which is great.

Loving: I'm loving Fall Break. We went to the fair and had a blast. John and I also went on a date and tried a new restaurant. I'm loving the plans we have for the rest of fall break. We still have a few places that we're hoping to visit before the break is over, so I'm excited about those plans.

    Fall 2023 Bucket List

Happy Saturday and First Day of Fall! I am so excited that it's finally fall. It really is the best season and the most wonderful time of the year. The signs of fall were already here, but it feels so much better now that it's officially fall. I always get struck with a hint of magic on the first day of fall.

Today was an amazing day. We're currently on fall break so it'll be nice to start doing our traditional fall activities. We spent the day with Mami and had so much fun. To celebrate the first day of fall, I bought a pumpkin spice latte and a pumpkin spice bundtlet. I also played a few fall themed songs and even bought my Halloween costume. Since today was a great day, I'm taking it as a sign that this season is going to be amazing.

Of course, now that the season has changed, it's time to share my fall bucket list. I absolutely love making seasonal bucket lists. As usual, I have my favorite things on the list, but I also included a couple of new things. I can't wait to start crossing off some things and maybe I'll even add a few more things to the list in the coming days.

If You and I Had Coffee

If you and I had coffee...

We'd meet at our favorite local coffee shop that sells books and is pure perfection. We'd check out the books while waiting for our pastries and seasonal drinks.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I'm so excited for autumn. Most stores like Target have all of their fall collections out. I'm shocked I haven't bought a mug or two from Target. However, I did buy an iced coffee cup at the Farmers Market. While at one of the farmer's markets, we went to over the weekend, the boys tried a sample of pumpkin bread and loved it. Of course, I bought a loaf. I've also been consuming too many pumpkin spice lattes, but I have changed it up and made some pumpkin spice hot chocolate. Honestly, I'm surprised I'm not tired of pumpkin-flavored drinks and food.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I think I'm finally getting out of my creative block. I've been working on my journal every day. I'm working on Liz Layne's Side by Side prompts in my journal and have been trying one-line drawings. I'm currently working on blog posts and some pieces for some upcoming Exhale blog hops. This creative burst is just what I needed, and I'm so grateful for it.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I've been reading so many good books and newsletters. I just read Ella Frances Sanders' latest newsletter, and the first line, "This month landed with a gulp," was so relatable. I keep finding so many written words that are hitting close to home. I'm going to take it as a sign. A sign for what? I don't know, but I should keep paying attention to those little words.

If you and I had coffee...

I'd tell you that I'm so glad that we were able to catch up. I know we've had to meet towards the end of the month lately, and things have been so busy, but I'm happy we could meet earlier. These little coffee chats mean so much to me. I can't wait to meet up again soon. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day and have a great month.

    September Goals

Happy Monday and Happy Labor Day! Can you believe that it's September? I have to say that I'm beyond excited that it's September. August was an absolute dumpster fire of a month and I'm glad that it's over.

School is officially back in session. I can't believe that my youngest son is in Kindergarten and middle son is now in middle school, and this year will be my oldest son's last year in middle school. The first day of school was definitely bittersweet.

Work has been so busy and stressful, but it's starting to ease up a little and I'm finally getting into the groove of having a routine. I ended up getting sick towards the end of the month and had a bit of a scare, but thankfully my trip to the doctor went well. I'm feeling much better and I'm just thankful that I'm ok.

Last month, was such a busy month that I didn't really focus on my monthly goals. In fact, looking back at my goals for August, I realized that I forgot about most of my goals so when you read through my recap don't be surprised when you see how many goals I didn't accomplish.

This month, I'm looking forward to a slower, more peaceful month. I'm looking forward to Fall Break and spending time with my family. I'm looking forward to consuming a ridiculous amount of pumpkin spice lattes and baked goods. I'm looking forward to all things cozy. I'm looking forward to getting out of this creative block and working on some creative projects.

Before I continue to ramble, let's have a quick recap on how I did with my goals in August and check out my new goals for September.

    Recap of August Goals

    • Read and review 1 book I received from NetGalley: I read Pretty Ugly by David Sedaris, Remember Love by Cleo Wade, and Nights of Silk and Sapphire by Amber Jacobs. I absolutely loved Remember Love by Cleo. Pretty Ugly was an ok read. I did not really like Nights of Silk and Sapphire and I would honestly kind of consider that one to be filed under DNF (did not finish).

    • Read 1 book I borrowed from the library: I read I Was Their American Dream by Malaka Gharib.  I Was Their American Dream is a graphic memoir about Malaka's life. It was interesting to learn about her family's Filipino and Egyptian cultures and customs.

    • Complete 1 One Little Word lesson: I did not complete a One Little Word lesson. I read the prompt, but completely forgot to work on the actual lesson.

    • Complete at least 1 month in my 2023 Project Life album: So I didn't work on my Project Life album, but I did look through the album to see what I wanted to work on next.

    • Complete Side by Side ecourse: I didn't complete the ecourse, but I did read the daily emails. I decided to complete this class in September since August was just an out of control month for me.

    • Work on my Little Summer Joy mini accordion album: This was another project that I didn't even bother to work on. I'm planning to keep this project very simple. Luckily, I have the album set up so all I have to do is add my photos and maybe do some light journaling.

    September Goals

    • Read and review 2 books I received from NetGalley
    • Read 1 book I borrowed from the library
    • Complete 1 One Little Word lesson
    • Complete at least 1 month in my 2023 Project Life album
    • Complete Side by Side ecourse

10 Things That Made Me Happy This Week

Happy Sunday! Today I'm linking up with Charlotte, Lindsay, and Beth for their weekly grateful and happy list link-up.

    1. Health insurance (I haven't been feeling well for over a week, and a couple of days ago, I felt so sick that I needed to go to the doctor. I'm doing better, but this reminded me that I'm so lucky to have health insurance.)

    2. Exhale's writing resources

    3. My coworkers

    4. Pumpkin Spice donuts from Krispy Kreme

    5. Getting some much-needed rest

    6. Noises by Crimson Apple (This song has been on repeat.)

    7. Savage Her Reply by Deidre Sullivan (I just started reading this book, and I love it. Savage Her Reply is a retelling of the Irish fairytale, The Children of Lir.)

    8. Working in my sketchbook/journal (One of my goals for this month is to work in my sketchbook every day. I'm working on this month's One Little Word prompt and Liz Layne's Side by Side course in my sketchbook. I'm also practicing one-line drawings in my sketchbook.)

    9. Trying a new recipe (I made a chicken burrito bowl, and the boys loved it.)

    10. It's finally September!

    August 2023 // A List

    Oh, August.

You came in fast and furious.

But you definitely took your time to go.

August you were the slowest and longest month by far.

Perhaps it's because summer is ending and school started up again.

    Routines are back again.

    But August...

    You were absolutely brutal.

There were long days, excessive heat, and so many bumps along the way.

I cried a few times and felt overwhelmed.

But you made me grateful to have family and friends who helped lift me up.

August, you were a whirlwind that I won't forget.

But I'm grateful to see how far I've come.

I won't lie and say I'm not sad to see you go.

But I will say that I'm happy and grateful for the lessons that I learned.

    So long, August.

    Hello, September.

Here's to better days ahead and, hopefully, a more peaceful month.
